Broadcast from 4/24/55 to 1/9/58, this was the fifth, final, and most successful of the old radio scifi series. This series stands above all others as the ultimate radio science fiction series. Most shows are by Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, Bradbury, and Anderson. Many scripts from "Dimension X" were reused, but, the series is mostly new material. Unlike previous and later U.S. science fiction series, X-1 tried to really emphasize the “sense-of-wonder” aspect of early science fiction. So much is now known about the nearer planets and science in general, that scifi’s fantasies about such things as living on other worlds and being able to quickly get around the Universe, seem increasingly unlikely. This series takes us back to the time when we still believed that anything was possible. Disc One THE EMBASSY A man appears at a detective agency wanting to hire them to find the Martians that he says are on Earth. The script is by George Lefferts. The cast includes Joseph Julian and Barry Kroger. Writer: Donald Wollheim. THE VELDT In the future, children can change the walls in their nursery to any location or theme they want. These kids like the African desert with lions. The story is adapted by Ernest Kinoy. Heard in the program were Mary Patton, Bill Quinn, David Pfeffer, Beverley Lunsford, Charles Penman, and John Larkin. Writer: Ray Bradbury ALMOST HUMAN A criminal takes over an android for proper training and has the tables turned on him as the android is almost human. George Lefferts wrote the story. The cast includes Santos Ortega, Joan Allison, Jack Grimes, Guy Repp, Nat Pollen, Joseph Julian and Lin Cook. Writer: Robert Bloch Disc Two COURTESY The story takes place on the planet Landro where explorers need help from the natives for a serum that they don't have with them. Writer: Clifford D. Simak COLD EQUATIONS This is the tale of a female stowaway aboard an emergency ship bound for her husband's planet. She finds out what it means not to have enough fuel. George Leffert did the script. The cast members were Court Benson and Jill Meredith. Writer: Tom Godwin SHANGAIED This is the tale of a man kidnapped onto a star ship on the eve of his wedding. He also owns the fleet. The script is by Ernest Kinoy. The cast members were Lyle Sudrow, Luis Van Rooten, Jack Tarpley, Jack Grimes, Jim Dukas, Ross Martin, Bob Dryden, Sid Raymond and Ivor Francis. Writer: Ernest Kinoy THE CASTAWAYS The military is having trouble moving natives off a Pacific island that is going to be used for a bomb test. They say they won't go because their ancestors were castaways from the bird canoe.
