MILTON BERLE SHOW – 6 Gut-Busting episodes!
Before he became Mr. Television, Milton Berle, Uncle Miltie to most, made it on
the radio. And boy... what a hoot it was...
"For a guy who never made it big on radio, I was always on," Milton Berle
quipped in his autobiography. He had six short-lived series between 1939 and
1949. Berle's comedy routines were structured around a series of one-liners
delivered at a rapid-fire pace. When Berles worked in vaudeville, he was noted
for "borrowing" jokes from other comics, and even worked this reputation into
his own comedy sketches.
"I listened to Jack Benny on the radio last night, " he said. "He was so funny
that I dropped my pad and pencil!"
He began his radio career doing guest spots on The Rudy Vallee Show. He later
was the host of several shows including: Shell Chateau, Ziegfeld Follies of the
Air, Stop Me If You've Heard This One, many others. His favorite was the radio
version of the Texaco Star Theatre from 1948-49 which aired on Wednesday nights
from 9 to 10 pm over the ABC network. Many famous stars such as Jack Albertson,
Arnold Stang, Frank Gallop, Aaron Rubin, Neil Simon were guests on his show.
